Lavaughn Coleman, 21, died at an area hospital weeks after he was subdued by a veteran member of the Anne Arundel County Police Department while disobeying commands.
According to investigators, in the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 29, officers from the department were called to the 900 block of Waugh Chapel Way in Gambrills, where there was a report of two men inside a vehicle with a gun and drugs.
The initial investigation found that when the officers arrived, they ordered two men out of the vehicle, a teen who complied and was placed in handcuffs, though Coleman resisted, stood up, struck the officer - knocking off his body-worn camera - leading to a foot pursuit that ultimately resulted in his death.
A pursuing officer chased Coleman prompting him to discharge the Taser, which struck him, but as he was falling to the ground he struck his head and had to be rushed to an area hospital.
During a search of the vehicle, police found a loaded, unserialized, 9mm handgun, $1440.00 in cash, and approximately 60 grams of suspected Cannabis, packaged for sale.
Coleman had been listed in critical condition at the hospital since his arrest until the Attorney General's Office announced his death on Monday morning
The officer involved was identified earlier this month as Cpl. A. Stallings, who has 10 years on the job and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.
Investigators say that the AG's office was alerted to the incident on the night it happened and after following updates on the injured man's condition, the investigation was then taken over by the IID.
